Personally, I Don’t Like A Fast Bowler As Captain - Ex-Keeper Darren Berry Doesn't Want Pat Cummins As Aussie Test Skipper

Former Australian cricketer Darren Berry does not want a fast bowler to captain a country personally and explained his experience of playing under a fast bowler. Darren Berry is known to be one of the sharpest wicket keepers, and he was one of the standouts in the domestic cricket for Australia with 153 first-class games under his belt.

Tim Paine has recently stepped down from Australia’s captaincy ahead of the Ashes due to his text exchange with a then colleague in 2017, and Australia are yet to name a captain.

The frontrunner for the role with be Pat Cummins, who has been the vice-captain of the side for a long time now, while ex-captain Steve Smith might also be in the race.

Darren Berry Reveals His Personal Preference For Captaincy

Darren Berry mentioned that  Pat Cummins deserves to be the captain of the side following Pat Cummins. However, he personally opined that he would’s prefer a fast bowler for captaincy. He explained that fast bowlers will feel tough to set the field after bowling their hearts out.

“Given the immediacy of it, I think they (CA) will go to Pat Cummins, and he deserves (it), he’s vice-captain, but personally, I don’t like a fast bowler as captain.

History says that it’s bloody tough to bowl 10 overs, go to fine leg and go, ‘now I’ve got to move the field’. I don’t like fast bowlers as captains, I’ve played under a couple, and they’ve been okay,” Ex-wicketkeeper Darren Berry said on SEN Drive on Saturday.

“If He’s Available, I Would Pick Him” – Darren Berry

Darren Berry mentioned that Tim Paine should be given be retained as the wicket-keeper in the side even after giving up the captaincy. He added that the horrible mistake does have nothing to do with his batting aspect and should not be dropped.

“As the Australian captain, with the revelations, he had no choice but to stand down as captain. I would like to say from the outset, if he is available, he is the best wicketkeeper in Australia, nobody condones what’s happened, it’s wrong.

“But he hasn’t killed anybody, he hasn’t robbed a bank, he’s made a horrible mistake that he’s going to have to live with, with his family, and I feel for him, even though he’s made a horrible mistake. But I want to say, and people will disagree, if he’s available, I would pick him,” he added.
