In the era of T20s, Test Cricket is finding it tough to sustain itself due to the bad light. In the recently concluded Australia & South Africa Test Series, the umpires had to suspend the day even in the presence of floodlights. The red ball cricket is losing its shine within 80 overs where most of the time the evening session is a curtailed one.

The evening session is often considered to be a fascinating one where the ball reverses and spinners are into the action. There have been talks going on that the pink ball could surpass the red ball (duke). With only a handful of nations playing Test Cricket, ICC must find a way to make the game more interesting.

Duke Managing Director Dilip Jajodia on Pink Ball

Dilip Jajodia was having an interaction with Sydney Morning Herald & the Age and was asked about Pink ball.

“I have a pink ball that is superior to anything else on the market, which will last 80 overs. In fact, he feels that the time has come for Test cricket to move on from red ball to pink ball. There is no reason why we shouldn’t move on to pink balls for red-ball cricket all the time. It doesn’t have to be day-night, it can be during the day, there’s no problem.”  said Dilip Jajodia.

“There is always the question of tradition, ‘we must have a red ball for red-ball cricket, we can’t have anything else’. But you’re in the entertainment industry. There are a lot of people who are paying a lot of money and they’re getting shortchanged.” he added.

Conundrum for ICC

As said by Dilip Jajodia, the tradition of red ball cricket would come into the way of pink ball. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy would give us a clear idea whether there is a need of pink ball cricket. The advantage of pink ball cricket is that the umpires won’t be worried about the shine of the ball.

This would be the 2nd ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2021-23) final where we have seen in England that how bad light spoils the craze of the Test match. ICC must find a middle way out of this situation where they can start the game half an hour to negate the threat of bad light.
