No matter which format of the game you are playing, it is never pleasant to be dismissed just one run away from reaching three figures. It is the same in IPL as well – even though your score of 99 could well be a match-winning one, falling one short of a ton always hurts.
Such is the case with the following four batsmen as well, the four unfortunate players to get out on 99 in IPL history. Let’s take a look at how they constructed their innings and how the game panned out.
Complete List Of Players To Get Out On 99 In IPL History
-
Chris Gayle (vs. Rajasthan Royals, 2020)
No stranger to scoring big in the IPL, Chris Gayle also has a 99 to his name, which came against the Rajasthan Royals in 2020. Gayle came in at number three in the second over itself, with his side at 1/1, and set about rebuilding the innings with skipper KL Rahul. The duo put on 120 runs before Rahul was dismissed, but Gayle was in the groove by then and carried on his merry way.
The Universe Boss ultimately perished after scoring 99 off 63 balls, smashing six fours and eight sixes before having his stumps rattled by Jofra Archer. Unfortunately for Gayle, his efforts came to no avail as the Royals ultimately chased down the Kings XI Punjab total of 185 with consummate ease.
-
Ishan Kishan (vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore, 2020)
Ishan Kishan is one of two unfortunate players to get out on 99 in IPL 2020, with the Mumbai Indians wicket-keeper batsman falling one short of his ton against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Batting first, RCB had put up an imposing 201/3, leaving a huge task for the Mumbai Indians batsmen.
The chase did not get off to the best start, with Kishan walking in at number four with his side 16/2. However, in a wonderful display of counter-attacking hitting, Kishan raced to 99 off 57 balls, an inning peppered with two fours and nine sixes before falling to Isuru Udana off the penultimate ball of the innings.
Kishan’s striking, along with Kieron Pollard’s late salvo, earned Mumbai a thrilling last-ball tie, but it was Royal Challengers Bangalore who came out on top in the Super Over.
-
Prithvi Shaw (vs. Kolkata Knight Riders, 2019)
Delhi Capitals’ swashbuckling opener Prithvi Shaw is second on this list of unlucky players to get out on 99 in IPL history. While facing the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019, Shaw was opening the batting alongside Shikhar Dhawan in pursuit of KKR’s 185 and flayed the ballers to all parts of the ground.
He had reached 99 off 54 balls with the help of 12 fours and three sixes when he was caught behind Lockie Ferguson and had to walk back to the pavilion one short of his ton. The match turned out to be a nail-biter as it ended in a tie before the Capitals prevailed in the Super Over.
-
Virat Kohli (vs. Delhi Daredevils, 2013)
Former Indian skipper and Royal Challengers Bangalore mainstay Virat Kohli became the first batsman to earn the unfortunate distinction of being dismissed on 99 against the Delhi Daredevils in 2019.
To make matters worse, Kohli was run out while going for the run that would take him to 100, off the last ball of the innings as well. However, the match ended on a sweet note for Kohli as his RCB side eventually ended up on the winning side thanks to Jaydev Unadkat’s fifer in the second innings.
