There was a time when a young MS Dhoni stunned the world with his fearless six-hitting and brutal finishing. And now, in the ongoing IPL 2025, Punjab Kings batter Prabhsimran Singh is showing the same energy and power that left the Australian legend Matthew Hayden impressed and stunned.

Prabhsimran Singh was retained by the Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, and he’s now paying back that faith in style as he is the top scorer for the side this season with 437 runs in 11 innings. On Sunday, May 4, he lit up the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala with a blistering knock.

In a high-octane clash full of IPL 2025 playoff pressure, the 24-year-old played a fiery knock of 91 runs off 48 balls, packed with six fours and seven monster sixes, to power PBKS to a mammoth 236/5 against the Lucknow Super Giants in Dharamshala on Sunday.

Later, Arshdeep Singh’s three-wicket haul and Azmatullah Omarzai’s two-wicket haul helped PBKS to restrict LSG to 199/7, as the hosts won the game by 37 runs in Dharamshala to move to the second spot on the IPL 2025 points table with 15 points from 11 matches so far.

However, it was the fireworks from Prabhsimran’s blade that left Matthew Hayden in awe for the PBKS star, who was later adjudged Player of the Match for his match-winning efforts against the LSG.

Matthew Hayden sees shades of MS Dhoni in Prabhsimran Singh

The Australian great couldn’t help but compare the right-hander’s explosive style to MS Dhoni's. Hayden was struck by Prabhsimran’s clean hitting, raw power, fearless intent, control, and blistering bat speed that has shades of a young Dhoni.

That rare mix of calm and carnage has left a great impact on the former Australian batter. Notably, Prabhsimran made the most of a golden chance, as he offered a towering catch on 22, but Nicholas Pooran dropped him, and it turned out to be a nightmare for Lucknow Super Giants.

Matthew Hayden said on Star Sports: “He (Prabhsimran) has got great power. Back in 2010, there was a young MS Dhoni who was launching balls in the last over of the day. Prabhsimran has got a similar sort of attributes. He has wonderful bat speed and a solid base.

He is not that tall, so he can really maneuver the ball into the gaps, and he is fearless. You can see by the way he took on the deliveries against LSG. He was in complete control. He has forced the bowlers to make mistakes.”

All credit goes to Ricky Ponting: Prabhsimran Singh on his Dharamshala blitz

After the match, the PBKS star credited the head coach, Ricky Ponting, for his memorable performances in the ongoing IPL 2025. He also opened up about his strategy against LSG.

Prabhsimran Singh said at the post-match presentation, “There’s no strategy as such, just reacting to the ball. All credit goes to Ricky Ponting, who gives us confidence and backs us. We try to maximize the powerplay, and if you get a chance, then it’s great. I was just trying to react as per the ball, and in between there was a stage where I could take some time because we lost two wickets in the powerplay.”
