Mark Boucher, who is the head coach of the South Africa National Cricket Team, has been charged with gross misconduct by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in their follow-up to Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) report.

Mark Boucher’s alleged involvement in the discrimination experienced by former spinner Paul Adams will now be looked into. On Thursday, Cricket South Africa appointed Senior Counsel Advocate Terry Motau (SC) as chairperson of the disciplinary hearing into allegations of misconduct against Boucher.

It is proposed that the parties [Boucher] will meet with Advocate [Motau] on 26th January 2022 to determine a timetable for the proceedings.”

The SJN report, which was released in December, made tentative findings that Boucher had engaged in prejudicial and discriminatory conduct in the past based on race. Also, during the SJN process, racism allegations were made against Boucher by former South African teammate Paul Adams.

This follows December’s Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) report, which made tentative findings regarding allegations of discrimination and racism against various persons, including Mr Boucher. Specifically, during the SJN process, allegations of racism were levelled against Mr Boucher by his former Proteas team-mate, Paul Adams.”

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman, Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza SC, releasing his report stated that he was not in a position to make “definite findings” and he proposed that a further process be undertaken for this matter.

“CSA confirms that a charge sheet, containing both the disciplinary charges against Mr Boucher, as well as his rights, was provided to him on 17 January. The upcoming inquiry will also consider concerns and allegations that arose following the resignation of former assistant coach, Enoch Nkwe.”

Mark Boucher could also lose his head coach job as he has been charged with gross misconduct by Cricket South Africa (CSA). However, CSA wants the independent inquiry to test all the allegations before making any big decision.

“While Mr Boucher is being charged with gross misconduct, which could lead to his dismissal, CSA emphasises it is important that the independent inquiry first needs to test all allegations before any question of sanction can arise.”

“The Board remains mindful of its duty to treat allegations of racism or discrimination with the utmost seriousness and in a manner that ensures fairness and due process in terms of South Africa’s Constitution and labour legislation. It is now up to the inquiry to determine to which extent the allegations are true and justify the need for further disciplinary steps,” CSA Board Chairperson, Lawson Naidoo said.
