Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid has on Monday, June 3, officially confirmed that the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 would be his last assignment as coach with the national side.

After Dravid confirmed he isn’t extending his contract with Team India, Harsha Bhogle shared his take on the breaking news ahead of the IND vs IRE clash in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Bhogle said that he was not surprised at all by Dravid’s announcement, as it was an open secret and everybody knew that the Indian coach would finish his tenure after the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and Caribbean.

No surprise at all: Harsha Bhogle on Rahul Dravid's decision

The well-known commentator also mentioned that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the CAC wanted Dravid to stay for a few months with the Men in Blue, and he agreed to stay till the T20 World Cup 2024, as it offered them some extra time to find a suitable candidate to replace the Indian legend.

Bhogle also clearly said that the BCCI will certainly look at the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to take up the high-profile job, but the legendary Indian batter won’t accept the offer since he has a young family and constantly juggling formats and players isn’t easy at all.

Harsh Bhogle said on Cricbuzz: “No surprise at all. I think it was an open secret that he wanted to finish after the last World Cup. Yeah. But they wanted a certain continuity. They wanted a little more time to pick the right person. So, Rahul Dravid agreed to do the job till now. But he had made it very clear that he was not going to continue. At that point, the ideal succession was probably looking at VVS Lakshman. Yeah. But I don't think he can accept the job either because he's got a young family growing up too.”

Bhogle further said that people often underestimate how difficult it is to be India’s head coach across the formats, and that comes at the cost of disrupting his family life, so finding a new coach would be a tough task for the BCCI.

The commentator highlighted Team India’s hectic schedule, saying no team plays more cricket than India and England. He added that England has two coaches, but BCCI wants a single for all three formats, which won’t work now.

Furthermore, the broadcaster BCCI must now make sure to give frequent breaks to the head coach, as it is very challenging for a person to constantly juggle formats and players. Given that, he was not really surprised why Dravid refused to continue his stint with the Men in Blue.

Bhogle further noted, “From time to time, you can send out somebody as a coach, but it's very, very difficult to be a full, for one person to be a full-time India coach. Constantly juggling formats, juggling players, not easy. So, it doesn't surprise me at all. And I mean, we know, all of us know Rahul, some of us better than others. He's a different, he's cut from a different cloth. So, he's given it his best and he says, I've done my job.”
