Former England skipper Eoin Morgan made a massive claim related to the white-ball coach of the team. He backed Brendon McCullum to take over the role, saying that Rob Key should’ve conversation with the red-ball coach of the team.
England faced a massive setback as white-ball head coach Matthew Mott stepped down from the position. This came after he came under scanner following his poor performances as coach in the last two World Cups - World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024.
Matthew Mott, who was two years into a four-year contract, surprised many with his decision because, after the T20 World Cup 2024, he stated that he was the right man to take the team forward and would be contributing to the team.
With him stepping down as the coach of the team, England is now under pressure to get a new head coach. There have been various suggestions about the same and one such came from the World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan.
Eoin Morgan feels that England should ask Brendon McCullum to take over the role in the white-ball formats as well. He highlighted what the Test coach has done in the format and stated that the team needs someone to help Jos Buttler, and there’s no one better than McCullum. Speaking to Sky Sports, he stated:
“In my eyes, at the moment, you would go to Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum. I say that because I believe he is one of the best coaches in the world. You see what he did with the Test team. Yes, the big question will be how he makes it fit over the course of the 12 months. But again, from Rob Key's point of view, he needs to make it attractive. So it's not the option to come in and let somebody grow in the job.
“You're talking about winning World Cups and winning Champions Trophies. This is not, you know, an opportunity for a young guy to come in. You want the best person on the planet to come in and help Jos Buttler and the England cricket team get better. You know Brendon McCullum better than most.”
He's a very versatile, more than capable coach - Eoin Morgan on Brendon McCullum
Eoin Morgan further stressed that Brendon McCullum has made a dramatic turnaround in the England Test team and highlighted his contributions to the New Zealand team. While calling him a more than capable coach who is highly, highly regarded, he said that the Test coach should take over the white-ball format as well. He added:
“To be honest, I'm not sure he's given a lot of thought yet. And if anything, he should. And Rob Key should have that conversation because we've seen the dramatic turnaround in the England Test team and the foil that he's made with Ben Stokes. But I've played under Brendon as a coach.
“We've seen what he's done in New Zealand cricket over the years and the success that he's had. He's a very versatile, more than capable coach who is highly, highly regarded, who ultimately has made the England Test team a better side, which is what you want from your head coach,” he concluded.
