Suryakumar Yadav’s short but confident knock in the ongoing five-match T20I series opener against New Zealand has finally eased the pressure around the Indian captain, and Ravichandran Ashwin believes that it came at the perfect time.
In the first T20I against the Black Caps, Suryakumar scored 32 runs from just 22 balls and, more importantly, looked comfortable at the crease. Ashwin feels this innings helped Suryakumar Yadav break free from a long phase of poor form that had put him under serious scrutiny.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Nagpur knock eases pressure ahead of ICC T20 World Cup 2026
Before the Nagpur outing, the Indian skipper had been struggling badly, averaging a little over 13 across his previous 21 T20I innings, which had raised questions about his confidence and rhythm, especially with the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon.

However, the stylish right-handed batter looked relaxed and in control as he smashed four boundaries and a six while playing his trademark shots against New Zealand in Nagpur.
It is a monkey off the back: Ashwin on Suryakumar Yadav breaking a lean patch
Even though it was not a big score, it was significant and showed positive intent, as it was only the third time he has managed to cross the 30-run mark in his last 20 T20I outings. And the former Indian off-spinner noted that Suryakumar Yadav could have easily slowed down and pushed for a personal milestone, but he stayed true to the team’s aggressive approach.
Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, “It is a monkey off the back. A lot of people were talking about Suryakumar Yadav's batting and his form and all of that. In all honesty, in T20 cricket, you don't have to aim for consistency. What I liked was that he got those runs; he looked in good touch today.
If a batter wants to look to get runs, they would have looked to get a fifty. But Surya did not do that. This team has a theme; they will look to keep scoring and hitting. He looked in his element. He looked good, and this is a big positive for him.”
Break for Kuldeep Yadav could help India long term: Ashwin
Meanwhile, the former Indian all-rounder also spoke about Kuldeep Yadav missing the first T20I after a tough ODI series against the Black Caps. He felt the break could help the Chinaman bowler reset mentally. At the same time, Ashwin highlighted the importance of balancing bowling strength with batting depth in T20 cricket.

Ashwin further explained, “But I am a big fan (of Kuldeep). You will have to get strong as a pack in T20 cricket and address the strengths somewhere else. If you do not have Jasprit Bumrah or someone else, then you have to address it with a bit of batting depth.
But in this team, you are getting runs in the powerplay, Hardik (Pandya) is scoring, and you have seven bowling options. I would like to play Bumrah, Arshdeep (Singh), Varun (Chakravarthy), and Kuldeep. But if it is like today, then it is absolutely fine.”
Ashwin hints at India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 blueprint
Looking ahead, the former Indian off-spinner also hinted that the current team combination could become India’s template for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He stressed that Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube must be regulars in India’s XI since there are only four games left before the mega event.
