India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin is currently playing in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 where he is leading Dindigul Dragons. An interesting incident occurred in a match between Dindigul Dragons and Nellai Royal Kings on July 28 (Sunday), which prompted Ashwin to roast the on-air commentators after the match.
During the first innings of the match when Dindigul Dragons were batting, Nellai Royal Kings left-arm spinner Mohit Prasath warned Ashwin of getting out of the crease at the non-striker's end before the ball was delivered.
The incident took place in the 15th over of the innings. It was shown later that Ashwin's bat was on the line as Prasath had stopped in his bowling stride.

However, it was later revealed that Ashwin was well inside the crease at the time when the ball was supposed to be released. The law clearly stated that the non-striker should be inside the crease only at a time when the ball is supposed to be released. This means Ashwin would have still survived even if the bowler had broken the stumps.
An X user later argued why the commentators were not pointing out the fact that Ashwin would have been not out even if the bowler had broken the stumps.
“Why are the commentators not pointing the fact that he was in at the time of the delivery stride and that it would have been a Not out?” the user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Ravichandran Ashwin roasts the commentators
Ravichandran Ashwin took some time out of his busy lifestyle to answer the user in a straightforward way and also roasted the commentators.
“Cos they don’t know the rule,” Ashwin replied to the user and also shared the MCC rules on this topic.
“At any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out if he/ she is out of his/ her ground,” Law 38.3 according to MCC laws of cricket, which pertains to the 'Non-striker leaving his/her ground early' states.
The law further states, “In these circumstances, the non-striker will be out run out if he/ she is out of his/ her ground when his/ her wicket is broken by the bowler throwing the ball at the stumps or by the bowler’s hand holding the ball, whether or not the ball is subsequently delivered."
