India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has praised Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their aggressive intent as an opening pair against Bangladesh.

The Indian team were in action yesterday at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium against Najmul Hossain Shanto's Bangladesh team. The Asian rivals met each other in the Super 8s of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies. A lot of doubts were around the forms of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but the experienced batting duo were able to counter the criticism.

Although they would have wanted to be a little resilient in terms of not giving their wickets, they will be satisfied with what they did. While Rohit Sharma smacked 23 off 11 at a daunting strike rate of nearly 210, Virat Kohli scored 37 off 28 at a strike rate of 132.14 and gave the Indian team a scintillating start against Bangladesh after losing the toss and batting first.

The approach was welcomed by some and criticized by some, but one thing's sure, if this helps India put pressure on the opposition early on, then it's fine. It will become even better if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma extend their short-lived fiery knocks to some full-fledged partnerships.

After all, a lot depends on how the duo plays together as an opening batter as their good performances will ensure that India reach the last stages. Virat Kohli in particular will be the one to watch out for in the upcoming high-pressure games. He has always been a player for the big stages and something similar will be expected from him.

Even though he is going through a lean patch, people should not forget that Virat Kohli has been the highest scorer in the last two white-ball events. He had finished with almost 300 runs in the previous World T20 edition in Australia and had amassed over 700 runs during last year's ICC Cricket World Cup on home soil.

As for Rohit Sharma, he also had a great run in the home World Cup and has also started to perform well in the ongoing edition of T20 WC.

What did Ravichandran Ashwin say about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma?

Off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his views on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's opening pair. Ashwin recognized the fact that the Indian team have never had an opening pair, that is capable of going out guns blazing and losing their wickets while trying to hit.

Ashwin claimed that losing wickets after scoring quickfire 30s and 20s is something Indian cricket will embrace soon.

"We are not used to an approach where batsmen throw it away after making 30’s 20’s, but it is about time we embrace an approach like this especially while batting first. 👌👌👌 Top Intent from all the Indian batters so far," Ravichandran Ashwin wrote on X.
