RCB in trouble? Karnataka High Court takes strict action on Bengaluru stampede tragedy

The Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu notice of the deadly stampede outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left at least 56 others injured during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations in Bengaluru.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday, June 4, in Bengaluru, where thousands of RCB fans had gathered to catch a glimpse of their champions. The Karnataka High Court bench led by Acting Chief Justice V. Kameswar Rao and Justice C.M. Joshi will hear the case at 2:30 PM on Thursday, June 5.

With mounting public outrage and the loss of innocent lives, the matter was urgently brought before the bench by a concerned advocate demanding immediate judicial intervention into the horrifying mismanagement by the KCA.

As reported by India TV, Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty is representing the Karnataka state, and he informed the High Court that action is already underway and a full report on the incident will be submitted soon.

Shashi Kiran Shetty told the bench, “This is not an adversarial matter. We are as concerned as any citizen of the state. We will present what has been done and are open to any suggestions.”

Several complaints filed over deadly stampede at RCB event

In the wake of the tragic stampede outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, several complaints have been filed against top officials for their alleged failure to prevent the disaster. The complaint has been registered under Section 106 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with responsibilities to prevent harm.

Social activist Snehamayi Krishna filed a formal complaint at the Cubbon Park Police Station, accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, and officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) of serious negligence.

In a separate call, Lohith Hanumanpura, who is the State Youth President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Karnataka, also filed a complaint. The state minister has demanded that an FIR be lodged against the KSCA and the CEO of the stadium, blaming them for poor crowd management during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory event in the city on Wednesday.

Karnataka Govt plans new SOP after RCB stampede tragedy

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has said that the state government will formulate a fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that will be created to ensure better planning and crowd control during big gatherings like celebrations, public meetings, and similar events.

Parameshwara stated, “Aimed at preventing such incidents, the home department will frame a new SOP. Police directives will be mandatory for all mega gatherings going forward.”

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, June 4, to review the situation. He has ordered a magisterial inquiry to find out what went wrong, and the investigation will be led by the Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner.

The Chief Minister said that if the inquiry finds any mistakes or negligence, strict action will be taken against those responsible for the tragic stampede. The Karnataka government is treating the matter seriously and wants to make sure such incidents do not happen again in the state.
