Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed his desire to coach another team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being sacked by Delhi Capitals. He said that he would love to take the role again in the league and he also talked about his time with the previous franchise.

Australian legend Ricky Ponting is considered one of the sharpest minds in the cricketing world. Apart from being a terrific player, he is also one of the finest coaches, who has made some decent contributions around the world.

In the IPL too, Ricky Ponting was associated with Delhi Capitals as the head coach. The former Australian skipper joined the team in 2018 and after that, he changed the way the Delhi-based franchise played their cricket and since then the franchise has been pretty decent.

Under Ricky Ponting Delhi Capitals played their first-ever final in 2021 but they failed to win the title. However. Ahead of the 2025 edition of the tournament, the franchise parted ways with their head coach as Delhi Capitals owners reportedly weren’t happy with his performances.

Ricky Ponting stated that he had a great time at Delhi Capitals but he admitted that things didn’t go the way he wanted. He said that he wanted to bring the trophy home for the franchise. He also revealed why the franchise parted ways with him and while speaking to ICC, he explained:

"I'd love to coach again in the IPL. I've had a great time every year that I've been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there. And then I've had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn't really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted. I think me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn't happen."

"They made it pretty clear that they wanted to head in a different direction with someone that could give them a bit more time and a bit more availability through the off-season, really more than anything to be able to spend a bit more time in India with a lot of the local players. I just couldn't do that with the other stuff that I've got going on.”

I'd love to be back coaching in the IPL again next season - Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting further stated that Delhi Capitals are looking for an Indian head coach but he is thankful to the franchise. He said that there might be few opportunities for him and he would be keen to head coach a team in the IPL. He explained:

"I think what you'll find is that they'll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. Certainly that's some of the dialogue that I've had with them anyway. But I'm really thankful for the time that I had there, met some great people, worked with some great people and obviously worked with some great players through the years as well.

“So I wish them all the very best but as I said there could be a few opportunities for me popping up in the next couple of months and I'd love to be back coaching in the IPL again next season,” he explained.
