Rob Walter has stepped down as South Africa's white-ball head coach, effective 30 April 2025, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Tuesday (April 1).

CSA has stated that Rob Walter decided to part ways with the Proteas owing to personal reasons. His resignation has been accepted by CSA. He was plying his trade as South Africa's T20I and ODI head coach since March 2023. Under him, the African outfit enjoyed a number of impressive campaigns in ICC tournaments.

South Africa had a mix bag of results in ICC tournaments

South Africa qualified for the semifinal of the 2023 World Cup before losing to eventual winners Australia. In 2024, they qualified for the T20 World Cup final for the very first time before suffering a loss against India in the title-decider.

Recently, they also made it to the semifinal of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they bowed out after a loss against New Zealand. The Champions Trophy campaign was his last assignment as the Proteas coach.

Rob Walter parts ways with South Africa:

Overall, South Africa played 36 ODIs and 31 T20Is with Rob Walter in charge of the team. During his tenure, they won series against the likes of Netherlands, Australia, Ireland and Pakistan.

"Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together," said Rob Walter.

"The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights," he added.

Director of National Teams and High Performance Enoch Nkwe said: "Rob has done an immense job for South African cricket over the past two years.

"It is also important to recognise Rob’s commitment to expanding the talent pool across both formats. While in charge, he ensured that emerging players had the opportunity to develop and make their mark at the highest level, which will be critical for the future of the Proteas.

"We have a busy period of white-ball cricket over the next two years as we build towards the Cricket World Cup on home soil. His successor will continue to work towards that 50-over World Cup campaign, along with next year’s T20 World Cup," added Nkwe.

Proteas to take on Zimbabwe next

CSA will announce the new head coach of South Africa's white-ball teams in due course. The Proteas' next white-ball assignment is in July when they visit Zimbabwe for a T20I tri-series featuring the home side and New Zealand.

It will be followed by the tour of Australia, where they are scheduled to play three T20Is and as many ODIs. After that, South Africa will visit England for three ODIs and as many T20Is.
