Following India’s defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 final, questions arise about the white-ball future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. As per reports, Kohli and Rohit might have a chance to participate in the T20 World Cup 2024, despite not playing T20Is for over a year.
The World Cup is scheduled to take place in the Caribbean and the USA in June 2024. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli haven’t played in T20Is since a 10-wicket loss against England in last year’s T20 World Cup. All-rounder Hardik Pandya led the team in the absence of Rohit.
Reports suggested the star duo might consider retiring from limited-overs cricket due to limited ODI series in the coming years, especially since they are not part of the T20I set-up. The batting duo finished as the top two leading run-getters in the recent World Cup 2023.
Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Can Play T20Is – A BCCI Source
As per Times Now, any decision regarding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup next year will be based on their own choice. The report added that if the duo expresses interest in playing in the T20 World Cup, they will be given the opportunity.
A BCCI source mentioned that Rohit Sharma will lead the national team in the marquee tournament if he decides to play in T20Is. Hardik Pandya will serve as his deputy in the tournament. Kohli will open the innings if Rohit quits the shortest format of the game.
“Rohit and Virat can play T20s and the T20 World Cup next year if they want. We can’t remove the highest run scorer of the ODI World Cup. They are both our biggest players,” a BCCI source told Times Now.
“If Rohit decides to leave T20Is, then only Hardik Pandya will captain the side; otherwise, he will be his deputy,” the source said.
India is set to play three international series before the T20 World Cup next year. They will kick off their preparation with a series against Australia, followed by a series against South Africa in December. They will play the final one against Afghanistan in January at home.
