Former India National Cricket Team skipper and selector, Kris Srikkanth, has held Rohit Sharma responsible for the flop show of the ODI and Test captain, Shubman Gill, in the 50-over matches against the Australia National Cricket Team.
Kris Srikkanth has said that the newly-appointed India ODI skipper, Shubman Gill, is struggling because he is feeling pressure after replacing a player of Rohit Sharma's caliber at the helm.
After performing in England, probably he is also putting pressure on himself - Kris Srikkanth on Shubman Gill replacing Rohit Sharma
Test captaincy suited Shubman Gill pretty well as he smashed 754 runs at an average of 75.40 in his debut series and guided India to a 2-2 draw against the England National Cricket Team.
However, the start of his ODI captaincy tenure has been a poor one for Gill. He lost the series against Australia 1-2 and only managed to score 10, 9, and 24 across three matches in the series.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma, who was replaced by Gill as skipper ahead of the Australia tour, smashed 202 runs in the series and won the Player of the Series award.
After the conclusion of the ODI series, Kris Srikkanth opined that Rohit Sharma might be the reason behind Gill's flop show because the youngster would have been facing the pressure of replacing the legend as skipper. He said:
“After performing in England, probably he is also putting pressure on himself. He shouldn’t do that and just play his game. He actually played well today but just got a superb delivery from Hazlewood.
"More than Shubman Gill getting himself out, it was a wicket-taking delivery that got him. But he does look to be under pressure, just observing his body language because he has replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain, while also opening alongside him."
And on the other side, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t playing - Kris Srikkanth
Not just Rohit Sharma, Kris Srikkanth claimed that Yashasvi Jaiswal also indirectly played a role in Gill's flop show, as him being on the sidelines keeps the India skipper under pressure to deliver a good performance every single time he is in the middle.
"And on the other side, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal isn’t playing. All that adds to his pressure.
"But he’ll get over it as he’s a fantastic player. He should just play his normal game because he’s getting his strides and shots right. He’s just getting out, that’s the only thing. So once he produces a couple of big knocks at home against South Africa, he’ll be set again," Srikkanth added.
He smiled like he had scored a century - Kris Srikkanth on Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli bagged two consecutive ducks in the first two matches in Australia, but things changed in the third ODI. He got off the mark on the first ball and celebrated it with a fist-pump gesture. The modern-day batting great remained unbeaten in the middle till the very end and played a brilliant knock of 74* runs. Talking about Kohli, Kris Srikkanth said:
"That sporting nature is the greatness of this great man (on the celebration after getting off the mark). He smiled like he had scored a century. So even after the two ducks, he had that sense of humor yet had the determination as well. He also makes batting look very easy by constantly rotating strike and giving strike to Rohit Sharma. Because of it, the bowlers are clueless."
"A young Virat Kohli was just steadying his place in 2011 when we won the World Cup. From there to reach the level he has now, it's unbelievable. Think about the mindset required for it. He is still so fit, be it fielding, running between the wickets and just his overall presence in the field. Just his presence is a vibrant presence. In a run-chase, you'll never find someone like Virat Kohli."
