Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed skipper Rohit Sharma’s aggressive approach. He said that the captain doesn’t need to be taught how to score centuries because it is the intent that counts.

Rohit Sharma’s aggressive approach during the ICC World Cup 2023 was one of the main highlights of his batting. The Indian captain took bowlers to cleaners in almost every game of the tournament. Even in the final, he batted with the same approach and took his team off the flyer.

Rohit Sharma scored 47 runs against Australia but even after that, he was criticized by many for not batting responsibly in the big final. The Indian captain after smashing Glenn Maxwell for four and six perished while attempting the third boundary and was caught by Travis Head.

Rohit Sharma finished ICC World Cup 2023 as the second-leading run-getter in the tournament. He scored 597 runs in 11 innings and was one of the main reasons why India reached the final of the tournament. His starts allowed other batters to take their time and bat freely.

Ravichandran Ashwin praised Rohit Sharma for his staggering performance while highlighting the intent. Ashwin also praised Shreyas Iyer, saying that his wicket was key in the final, and admitted that he got out at the wrong time. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:

“Rohit Sharma does not need to be taught to score hundreds. It is the intent that counts. Shreyas Iyer’s wicket fell at a very important time in the final.

“Spinners were clobbered by Iyer and it was a setback that we could not get that in the final. He took an oath to master the pull shot and faced countless balls and worked on it. He got out a couple of times to it, but look at the number of short balls he hit for boundaries.”

It took me a day or two to reflect on how our campaign went – Ravichandran Ashwin

India suffered a disappointing loss against Australia in the final of the ICC World 2023. Till the time they were undefeated and won 10 games on the trot but couldn’t handle the pressure of the final.

Ravichandran Ashwin said that he was confident that they would win the World Cup and it hurts them when they wake up after night’s sleep. He credited skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid for the brand of cricket that the team played in the World Cup. He explained:

“It took me a day or two to reflect on how our campaign went. Before the final, I was pretty confident that we would emerge as winners. But once the match ended, the emotion was a little flat. It starts hurting the players after waking up from a night’s sleep.

“This World Cup had us playing an exciting brand of cricket and we played outstandingly well and one of the primary reasons for that is the effort that Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid put in and their schematic thinking and everything was thought out tactically down the wire.”

Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin will next be seen in action when India will tour South Africa next month.
