Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of an epic achievement as the Indian cricket team prepares to face New Zealand in a three-match Test series on home soil.
After a clean sweep of Bangladesh in the two-match Test series at home, the Indian captain is looking to solidify his legacy against New Zealand.
However, despite his tactical brilliance against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma’s performance at the crease was just disappointing, with his highest score being just 23.
Well, the upcoming India vs New Zealand Test series offers the 37-year-old a great opportunity to cement his name among the greatest Test captains India has ever produced.
Rohit Sharma set to rewrite history in India vs New Zealand Test series
Actually, Rohit Sharma is on the brink of rewriting history in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, starting with the first Test at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on October 16. If India clinchs all three Test matches against the Kiwis, Rohit will become India’s most successful captain in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
With his win percentage already surpassing expectations, Rohit could outshine Virat Kohli, who left behind a formidable record during his tenure, in the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand to become India’s most successful captain in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
Virat Kohli led Team India in 22 Test matches at the WTC, and the team won 14 and lost 7 out of which, while one match ended in a draw. The 35-year-old Virat Kohli ended his tenure as India’s captain at the WTC with a win percentage of 63.63.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has so far led India in 18 WTC matches, winning 12 and losing 4, while two games ended in a draw and has a win percentage of 66.66.
Rohit Sharma is set to become India’s fourth most successful captain in New Zealand Tests
Furthermore, if the Indian cricket team pulls off a 3-0 dominant Test series win over the New Zealand side, Rohit will further rise in the rankings of India's all-time greatest captains. The Indian skipper is just two victories away to overtake Sourav Ganguly and become India’s fourth most successful captain across formats.
His current tally of 95 wins across 128 matches already places him among the elites, but a whitewash over New Zealand would see him surpassing Sourav Ganguly and pushing close to legends like MS Dhoni, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Virat Kohli.
The former India captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly led the team to 97 wins from 196 matches across the formats. Legendary captain MS Dhoni is currently India’s most successful captain in all three formats of the game, leading the side in 332 matches, winning 178 and losing 120.
MS Dhoni leads the chart as India's most successful captain
Dhoni is followed by Virat Kohli (135 wins) and Mohammad Azharuddin (104 wins). Notably, Rohit has a stellar record as a batter in the WTC, scoring over 2,500 runs in 34 matches with the help of nine hundred and seven centuries.
The Indian skipper in Tests and ODIs is currently India’s top scorer in the WTC, but the New Zealand Test series is his chance to reaffirm his role as one of the world’s leading batters.
