The BCCI’s senior selection committee has appointed opening batsman Rohit Sharma as One Day Internationals (ODI) and T20 Internationals (T20I) captain of the India National Cricket Team. Also, Rohit has replaced Ajinkya Rahane as Virat Kohli’s deputy in the Test cricket.

Virat Kohli before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 announced that he will be stepping down from T20I captaincy following the World Cup but he mentioned that he will continue to lead the team in the ODI and Test format.

Meanwhile, Rohit was appointed as new T20I captain of India ahead of the New Zealand series at home and sources to TOI said:

“The board is now convinced that white-ball captaincy cannot be split”

The sources have revealed that the decision to quit the limited-overs captaincy was of Kohli and the cricket board has allowed a smooth transition.

Sources have told TOI that captaincy was taking away a lot of time of no. 2 ranked ODI batsman Kohli and he needed a break from this to focus on his batting.

“Captaincy had been taking away a lot of his time and that is why he needed this break. It will allow him to focus on his batting which is most important to him right now,” Source.

Newly appointed Captain Rohit Sharma is regarded as one of the finest batsmen in the world across all three formats and he has proved himself by leading his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians (MI) towards 5 title wins.

Also, he was previously involved in a leadership role with Kohli in limited-overs cricket and after his outstanding performances in Test, he has become the vice-captain in Test cricket. Notably, Rohit is currently the highest-ranked Indian batsman in the ICC Test rankings as he is ranked fifth.

“He has shown all signs of a cricketer wanting to improve across all formats”.

“The question for Rohit was always about what next? He had proved himself time and again and when you consistently do that, there has to be a reward of some sort. He could’ve gone on being the batsman that he is until his time came. But now, with captaincy on his plate, there’s so much he’ll be looking forward to,” sources to TOI.
