Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson opened up about the disappointing loss his side faced in the 52nd game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He said that the no-ball from Sandeep Sharma ruined their result.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a heartbreaking 4-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad at home. It was a game that they had in their court for most of the time. But a couple of bad overs saw the opposition snatching victory from them.

Based on the staggering effort by Jos Buttler (95), Sanju Samson (66*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) they posted a total of 214 runs on the board. With the ball, they were quite decent and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Yuzvendra Chahal with his four-wicket haul almost ensured the win for his side.

With 41 runs needed off the last two overs, Glenn Phillips smashed 22 runs in the 19th over and brought a twist to the tale. With 17 runs needed, Sanju Samson yet again handed the ball to Sandeep Sharma to defend the target in the last over and he almost did it but an error from him cost them the game.

Sandeep bowled exceptionally well and with 5 runs needed in the last ball, he removed Abdul Samad and RR started to celebrate the win. But the no-ball siren struck them and then the batter smashed him for six to win the game for SRH and hand RR yet another loss.

Sanju Samson said that he trusted Sandeep Sharma to win them the game as he did the same against CSK but a no-ball in the end ruined the result for them. He added that no-ball might have hampered the pacer’s mindset. He explained:

“This is what IPL gives you, matches like these makes the IPL special. You can never, never, never feel like you have won the game. I knew any opponent can win it and they were batting well too, but I was confident with Sandeep (defending the final over). He has won us a game from a similar situation (against CSK). He did it again today but that no-ball ruined our result. We played really well with the bat to put up that kind of a score on this wicket, but I think they (SRH) batted really sensibly, credit has to go to them for the way they batted.

(About how he felt after the last ball was called a no-ball) Nothing much, it’s a no ball, just have to bowl it again as simple as that, you don’t think about it too much. Sandeep knows what to do. Maybe there might be a small change in mindset for a few seconds when you feel that the job is done, everyone was celebrating but I think that’s the nature of this game, you can’t step the line at that point of time.”

RR vs LSG: “Life is never easy playing this format,” says Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson further went on to say that they were happy with the way their batting lineup clicked but he’s disappointed with the way the things concluded. He added they now need to play every game at their best standard and come back hard. He explained:

(Asked if they were happy with the total they got as the batting clicked as a unit) But with the target we posted, you can only feel happy once you win the game right, so not at all happy at the moment. (Asked if they should have scored more) That’s a great question… I don’t know. (Thoughts moving forward in the tournament) To be honest, life is never easy playing this format, especially this tournament. Each and every game we have to play our best standard of cricket. We will come back and try to do it again.”

Rajasthan Royals (RR) will be next seen in action when they will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their next game on Thursday (11th May).
