Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, has stated that the “door is open” for all-rounder Ben Stokes to return from his ODI retirement to participate in the 50-over World Cup, which will be contested in India later this year.

Ben Stokes, England’s Test captain, retired from one-day internationals last year to manage his workload.

“The door is always open for a player of that quality, but we are also very mindful that his main priority as captain is red-ball cricket, We respect that, and we’ll talk when he’s ready,” Mott said to reporters ahead of England’s three-match ODI series against South Africa, which begins on Friday.

Stokes was named man of the match in England’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand. The 31-year-old was instrumental in England’s victory over Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup final.

“We want to pick the best players possible”: Matthew Mott

When asked if Stokes would receive a deadline to make a decision, Mott responded, “I’ve had some nice discussions with Jos Buttler and Rob Key (director of England men’s cricket) on this”

“What we’ve learned, as you’ll see on this tour, is that players play a lot of franchise cricket, going in and out at different times, so we need to retain a really flexible, open mind to players, and when we sit down to pick that 15 for the World Cup, we want to pick the best players possible,” Matthew Mott Added.

Mott was named the England cricket team’s white-ball coach in May 2022. Mott led the men’s T20 England cricket team to win over Pakistan in the ICC World Cup in Australia in November 2022.
