West Indies beat South Africa by 48 runs in the second ODI of the three-match series at Buffalo Park in East London on Saturday, March 18. The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the series after the first match was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain. Captain Shai Hope believes that they want to turn things around in the 50-over format after forgettable performances in 2022.

Shai Hope was named as captain in the ODI format just before the series against the Proteas. The 29-year-old started his stint as captain on a high note by guiding his side to victory with a brilliant century. The right-handed batter scored an unbeaten 128 runs to help the team put up a good total of 335 runs. The hosts were bundled out for 287 runs, despite skipper Temba Bavuma’s 144.

Speaking after the game, Shai Hope said that his teammates have given him full support on and off the field. The 29-year-old is excited about his ability to guide the team to new heights.

“It’s something we speak about in the meetings. We are just trying to win more cricket games. We didn’t have a successful 2022 and we are trying everything to turn it around. It’s about giving my all to the team. I am getting support from all ends. I have got support from guys off the field and on the field. I’ve got to keep embracing the responsibility and when the time comes to shine, I’ll do so,” Shai Hope said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

I Can’t Control What The Selectors Do – Shai Hope

Shai Hope encouraged his players to focus on what they could control, such as their preparation, play, and performance on the field.

“Something that I always preach in the camp: control what you can control. I can’t control what the selectors do, I can’t control things behind the scenes, all I can control is the way I prep, the way I play and the performance I put in on the field. If the chance and the opportunity arises, I will take it with both hands.”

The Men in Maroon will take on South Africa in the third and final match at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Tuesday, March 21. The visitors will be hoping to win the last game and seal the series.
