Cricket South Africa (CSA) added new regulations for the second edition of South Africa’s premier T20 League (SA20) competition to maintain high standards. The salary cap has been increased by R5.1 million (USD 276,000 approx) to R39.1 million (USD 2.1 million approx) from the first year.

The increase in the salary cap will allow the team to pick quality players for the tournament. The squad size has also increased to 19, with the addition of a rookie player. Teams will need to acquire a rookie South African player who is 22 years old or younger and has not featured in the SA20 before.

Betway SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith said that the new regulations will help to pick quality players from all over the world for the second edition of the league.

“We have put these new regulations in place to build on the successful first season of Betway SA20, which was underpinned by entertaining and quality cricket from some of the best players in the world,” Graeme Smith said.

The official trading window for South African players opened on June 1, allowing teams to pre-sign, trade, buy, or retain their players ahead of the auction. This increased capacity allows teams to pre-sign up to four foreign players, allowing previously unavailable players to be signed before the auction.

“The addition of a rookie player to the squads shows our continued commitment and investment to giving young talent exposure on a global platform,” he continued.

“We saw some special performances from the young players in our first season. SA20 remains aspirational for up and coming cricketers and this is another opportunity for them to showcase their skills,” he concluded.

Six teams must have 11 South African players in their squads in the upcoming season. A team can field a maximum of four overseas and seven local players in their playing XI. The inaugural edition of the SA20 season was successful, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape became champions.
