The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) treasurer Arun Dhumal has opened up on the Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli debate, asserting that the whole idea of who is the better between the two players has only originated from the public and the same had happened in past when comparisons were made between Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar and between Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

Former India captain Kohli and current India captain Rohit are two of the modern-day greats of the game and they have got sensational numbers in international cricket. Also, while batting together they have dismantled the bowling unit of the opposition and the Rohit-Kohli duo is one of the most successful batting pairs in ODI history.

Kohli and Rohit have scored 4914 runs at an average of 63.81 while batting together in 82 innings and they have had 18 century stands and 15 half-century partnerships.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, veteran journalist Vimal Kumar asked BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal about the Kohli vs Rohit debate.

The BCCI treasurer responded by saying that the Board of Control for Cricket in India never thinks about the Rohit vs Kohli debate and the board does not differentiate between them. He added that the debate has originated from social media platforms where fans are allowed to talk about anything.

“We never think about it. It is the passion of fans that drives them and this debate. When you are attached to an emotion, then you tend to say all that. And social media is a platform where you can talk about anything.”

“They speak their heart out because there are no restrictions. That is why people think it persists. We saw the same with Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, or later between Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar. On social media, matters amplify to an extent that people believe all this is true,” Dhumal told veteran journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

Dhumal, while speaking in the same video, said that Kohli is not a simple player and he is among the all-time greats. He added that everyone wants Kohli to return to the form.

“See… as far as Virat is concerned, he is not a simple player. He is a great and his contribution to Indian cricket is unparalleled. It is outstanding. So, such conversations (the board is trying to sideline Kohli) keep taking place in the media and it does not affect us. We want that he returns to form soon, and as far as team selection is concerned, we leave it to selectors. It is their call as to how they want to go about it.”
