The GT20 Canada league was marred by the massive controversy on Friday (9th August). Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangla Tigers Mississauga Cricket Team and Toronto Nationals Cricket Team were all set to lock horns with each other in the Eliminator of the tournament.
However, the rain gods didn’t allow the eliminator of the GT20 Canada between Bangla Tiger and Toronto Nationals to take place. The match between the two teams got washed out due to the wet outfield and as per the laws of the game, it was almost certain that Shakib Al Hasan’s team would qualify.
This was because the Bangla Tigers were placed in a higher position than the Toronto Nationals in the points table of the GT20 Canada. The league game between the teams that took place earlier also was won the Shakib Al Hasan’s team and by this scenario, they should’ve moved ahead in the tournament.
However, in a massive shocking announcement, GT20 Canada announced Toronto Nationals have qualified for Qualifier 2. Even when there was a wet outfield, the match referee tried to conduct the super over to have a result for the Eliminator between Bangla Tigers and Toronto Nationals.
But this was against the rule of the ICC as super overs are only played when there are tied games. Bangla Tigers immediately denied playing the game and their skipper Shakib Al Hasan also argued and didn’t go for the toss for the super over which was forced by the match referee despite the outfield being wet.
As Shakib Al Hasan didn’t come for the toss, the GLT20 declared the result. They made the statement that Toronto Nationals automatically advanced to Qualifier 2 and even shared posters on social media, which they even deleted a while later.
According to the rules, “at least 5 overs are needed to be played for a result. In no circumstances, except a tied game, 1 over can be played to decide the result of a game.” With the match referee deciding to play the super over to get the result, it was clearly against the rules of the game.
