India Concede First 500-Plus Total in an Overseas Test Since 2015
India conceded over 500 runs in an overseas Test innings for the first time in a decade during the fourth Test against England. No team had reached the 500-run mark against India outside Asia in the past nine years.
Notably, it’s only the third time in the past 20 years that England have crossed 500 runs in a Test innings against India. Their previous 500-plus scores came in 2016 at Rajkot (537 runs) and in 2021 at Chennai (578 runs).
India conceded 500-plus runs 14 times in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) between 2010 and 2015. However, they didn’t allow any team to reach that mark in SENA from 2015 to 2024, with Virat Kohli leading the side in most of those matches.
When Was the Last Time India Conceded 500+ Runs in an Overseas Test Innings?
India had last conceded over 500 runs in an overseas Test in 2015 during the Sydney Test in Australia. Australia scored 572/7 declared in their first innings, with centuries from David Warner (101) and Steve Smith (117). Mohammed Shami secured a five-wicket haul, but India struggled with the ball.
India responded with 475, including hundreds from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. Australia set a target of 349 in the final innings, and India ended at 252/7. India had not allowed any side to breach the 500-run mark in an overseas Test until the current fourth Test against England in Manchester.
Joe Root and Ben Stokes Make India Struggle on Day 3
Coming to the Manchester Test, England began the day at 225/2. Openers Ben Duckett (94) and Zak Crawley (84) had already given the hosts a solid foundation, and Ollie Pope (71) and Joe Root continued the momentum.
Pope and Root added a century stand before Washington Sundar dismissed Pope and Harry Brook in the second session. Root scored 150 off 248 deliveries, including 14 boundaries. He surpassed Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test history.
Captain Ben Stokes added an unbeaten 77 runs, despite briefly retiring hurt due to a leg cramp. He returned later in the day to continue his innings after the fall of the seventh wicket. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah faced fitness concerns, with Bumrah bowling just one over with the second new ball.
By stumps, England had reached 544/7, leading by 186 runs. Stokes remained unbeaten alongside Liam Dawson (21*), leaving India with a daunting task heading into Day 4.
