Former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds recalled a funny instance from his playing days which also involved late Australian spinner, Shane Warne. Warne died of a heart attack on March 4 in Thailand at the age of 52.

Warne was considered one of the greatest spin bowlers of all time, someone who would deceive the opposition batters with his magical deliveries. Warne’s guile with the ball was as such that he served four Australian skippers during his storied career and was a go-to bowler for any captain.

Shane Warne used to have a lot of socks and a lot of boots: Andrew Symonds

Symonds shared the Australian team’s dressing room with Warne for almost a decade since the former made his ODI debut in 1998. The 46-year-old recalled how he came to discover Warne’s collection of $100 notes (in Australian dollars) in his socks’ bag.

“We were playing a Test match here, I think it was against South Africa in the Boxing Test. The third day we were into and I remember walking in and his gear was just all over the floor. He used to have a lot of socks and a lot of boots, and in between all his big woollen cricket socks was this Woolworths bag full of rolled up $100 notes,” Symonds told Fox Cricket.

It sort of caught my eye as I went past, just rolls and rolls of money. I said to Warnie, ‘Mate what’s the story here?’. He goes, ‘Oh I had a little win at the casino last night Roy and you know what? Cash is king’,” he added.

Shane Warne was hugely generous: Andrew Symonds

Symonds also mentioned that he was fortunate to be friends with Warne and called him generous for his nature.

“It was about 40-grand laying on the ground there! You realise how special he was . He was hugely generous, he would always help someone he liked. I was fortunate enough to be in that category.,” the former Australian all-rounder said.

Warne’s memorial service was conducted on Wednesday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and was attended by many former Australian cricketers including Glenn McGrath and Michael Clarke.
