Pacer Sheldon Cottrell, middle-order batsman Shimron Hetmyer, and all-rounder Roston Chase are back in West Indies’ ODI set-up for the upcoming home series against Australia, in Barbados starting July 20.

The trio had missed out on selection for the team’s last ODI series, against Sri Lanka in March, after failing to meet the management’s required fitness standards.

Roston Chase and Shimron Hetmyer featured in the Test and T20I legs, respectively, of the recently-concluded home matches against South Africa. Sheldon Cottrell, however, hasn’t played for the side since November 2020.

Seamer Anderson Phillip, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in March, has retained his place in the side, while Kyle Mayers and Kevin Sinclair are dropped.

West Indies defeated Sri Lanka 3-0, on the other hand, this series would be the first ODI series for Australia this year since losing to India in the Test series at home.

“This squad is coming off a comprehensive series win against Sri Lanka which should boost their confidence going into what is expected to be a tougher contest against Australia. The return of Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase and Sheldon Cottrell adds greater depth and experience to the squad,” chief selector Roger Harper said.

“Playing in familiar home conditions, hopefully will bring out the best in each player thereby enabling the team to perform at a consistently high standard.”

The ODIs will be played on July 20, 22 and 24, and will be part of the ODI Super League for qualification for the 2023 World Cup in India. A 5-match T20I series precedes the ODI series; Kieron Pollard’s side recently lost 3-2 to South Africa in the shortest format, and they host Aaron Finch’s team from July 9 in St Lucia to 16. The same squad that featured in the T20Is against South Africa is set to play this series and the later one against Pakistan as well.
