Mohammad Amir and the Pakistan Cricket Board have come under fire from former pacer Shoaib Akhtar for the left-arm bowler’s alleged return to international cricket for Pakistan.

Mohammad Amir is now playing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he plays for Sylhet Strikers and is currently the league’s top wicket-taker. He has taken 13 wickets so far in 10 games for an economy of 5.95.

Since PCB Chairman Najam Sethi opened the door for Amir to rejoin the team and permitted him to train at the National High-Performance Centre, his decision to play once again for Pakistan has been a hotly debated subject.

In 2020, the 30-year-old filed a complaint about the treatment he had received from the management. Amir can play for Pakistan if he reconsiders his decision to retire from international cricket, according to Sethi, who recently supported his return to the team.

“We were also dropped in the past”: Shoaib Akhtar

Shoaib Akhtar criticized Amir, claiming that he did not help Pakistan cricket and was only penalized for doing something wrong. The 30-year-performances old’s declined following his heroics at the 2017 Champions Trophy, says the former cricketer.

“In my perspective, phoning Mohammad Amir and asking if he wants to play is not the appropriate strategy. We were also dropped in the past, and the PCB management was upset with me for nearly 12 years, but it doesn’t mean I should give up. Instead, we should consider what Pakistan’s needs are; this was his error” Shoaib Akhtar said.

“He goes on to remark in interviews that he invested himself in cricket, and he has also been penalized in the past. You did something bad, so you got punished. You did not do Pakistan cricket any favors. You had to repay what the country had given you; the country expected it from you,” Shoaib Akhtar said.

“Until 2017, he had average performances, which were followed by a spectacular showing in the Champions Trophy. “However, there was virtually anything decent in the next 15-20 ODIs,” Shoaib Akhtar added.

Amir is presently playing for Sylhet Strikers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
