South Africa all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel left his team stranded during the One-Day Cup final and rushed straight to the airport to catch a flight to England. Now, an official investigation has been launched into Beyers Swanepoel’s shocking and unprofessional move.

The incident happened during the South Africa One-Day Cup title clash between the Central Gauteng Lions and the Titans. Players and fans were shocked to see Swanepoel leave the match in the middle.

South African Beyers Swanepoel leaves in the 43rd over; Central Gauteng Lions forced to play with 10 players

Swanepoel had already bowled his full quota of 10 overs for Central Gauteng Lions, but instead of staying with his team till the end, he reportedly went straight from the ground to the airport. This happened around the 43rd over of the summit clash.

To make matters worse, the umpires refused to allow a substitute fielder, leaving the Lions short of one fielder for the rest of the match. They played with only 10 players during a nail-biting chase. The Titans eventually won the One-Day Cup final by three wickets.

Players and coaching staff unaware of Swanepoel’s early departure

Shockingly, none of Swanepoel’s teammates and Central Gauteng Lions’ coaching staff knew he was planning to leave mid-match. Many players on the field thought he had left early due to some injury. Even the captain, Bjorn Fortuin, kept questioning the match officials why they were not being allowed a substitute.

It is being said that the coaching staff only knew about Swanepoel’s travel plans on the morning of the match, but they had no idea that he would leave the match in the middle. Interestingly, Central Gauteng Lions head coach Russell Domingo was not even present for the final.

He had already flown to England after finalizing a contract to coach Hampshire in the County Championship. However, Domingo had taken the approval weeks in advance.

Worcestershire deal behind Swanepoel’s move

Swanepoel, who joined the Central Gauteng Lions from Eastern Province at the start of this season, also has a contract with Worcestershire in England. The County Championship is all set to begin on April 3, with Worcestershire set to face Derbyshire.

So, Swanepoel was expected to join the Worcestershire squad before the tournament started. But he shocked everyone by leaving early, and that too in the middle of the final clash, which has raised serious questions about discipline, commitment, and team responsibility.

Internal inquiry announced by Central Gauteng Lions

The Central Gauteng Lions Union CEO Jono Leaf-Wright has announced that they have begun an internal inquiry. The union wants to know why a contracted player left his team at such a crucial moment without clear communication.

The investigation is set to look closely into the timing of his flight, what he told the support staff, and why he chose to leave while the final was still going on.

Leaf-Wright stated: “I’m just extremely disappointed with Beyers. This is not the kind of conduct we as the Lions expect from our players. He has let down his teammates and the union.”
