Former Indian selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth seems unsatisfied with the sudden notions of Shubman Gill's comeback into the T20I side, as he feels that the player was not considered for any major T20 event, and that should remain the case, providing the likes of Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal with T20I spots.
Indian selectors are about to announce the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup by today or tomorrow; however, before that, tensions have built around Shubman Gill's probable inclusion, as some have favoured the call, while some have also tagged this as completely unnecessary.
Though not yet confirmed officially, with Surya's recovery, it seems imminent that he will be leading the Indian side in his first major multi-team tournament as the skipper of the national side. Former selector has things to say on Gill's sudden comeback.
Shubman Gill's comeback in T20s dismissed by former selector
Former Indian selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has criticized the sudden calls for Shubman Gill in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025. The batter has taken up the role of a skipper for the Gujarat Titans as well as the Indian Test side and has performed well with both the bat and as a leader on the field.
Before the Champions Trophy and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the 25-year-old was asked to focus primarily on the ODI and Test formats; however, with the World Cup next year, India seems to be bringing back their old heroes.
Srikkanth is among the few men who stood against the notion of recalling Gill out of the blue, also pointing to his not being part of the ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024.
Shubman Gill was not in the T20 World Cup Squad - His selection would deprive youngsters of
The former Indian opener mentioned how Shubman Gill is no longer needed in the 20-20 format, since India already has many young stars to open in the shortest format, and Gill's return would deprive them of fair opportunities.
"If Shubman Gill was the captain [in T20Is], he would have automatically come into the playing XI. Then, there would be no Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, or Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Gill would have opened straightaway. But Gill wasn't part of the T20 World Cup. Where does he come in suddenly?" Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Gill last played for India in T20s in the Sri Lanka tour
Once criticized for his low strike rate and taking too long on the crease, Shubman Gill shifted gears and changed his approach as soon as he got to the Gujarat Titans and was handed some responsibilities as an opening batter. He had his best season in 2023 with 890 runs scored in just 17 innings; he fell 10 runs short of becoming the second batter in the IPL with 900 runs in a season.
Gill's team India numbers speak of 578 runs from 21 games at a strike rate of nearly 140 and a hundred to his name as well. He last played for India in the Sri Lanka tour in 2024 and has not been seen in the series that followed. In South Africa and England, he was kept out of both these series.
"He was not even in the T20I team against England. Yes, he has been doing very well recently, but we can't make selection calls like that," the 65-year-old went on to add, that Gill was not a part of the England T20s, despite which India won comfortably.
