The former Indian player Sunil Gavaskar backs the IPL as the IPL stage is the perfect stage to learn leadership skills on the ground. Shubman Gill currently lacks international leadership experience, and he requires more experience before taking over the national captaincy.
The Gujarat Titans' Gill is expected to be the new skipper of the Indian Test team for the next tour of England in June. According to reports, Pant will be his deputy in the red-ball format.

Sunil Gavaskar on inexperienced Shubman Gill
The Indian great discussed the inexperience of Shubman Gill and after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India might face challenges in the red-ball format.
Gavaskar added that Gill needs one or two years of experience at least to become the finished product in Test cricket.
Gavaskar also advised the same thing for two other young stars who are also in line for captaincy, including Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer.
"It would take a couple of years to get to the level of our super captains. All of them brought a different approach to captaincy," said Gavaskar stated on Star Sports.
These three young players are captaining their side respectively in the IPL 2025 and all three of them are leading their side well in this season.
Sunil Gavaskar’s advice for Gill, Pant and Iyer
The next three potential candidates for the Indian captaincy have been advised by Gavaskar to perform well in the IPL.
He thinks the pressure of a T20 game is unmatchable, and all three of them are leading franchises in the IPL 2025.
Shubman Gill is leading the Gujarat Titans, while Pant is leading the Lucknow Super Giants, and Iyer is captaining the Punjab Kings. These three are the potential skipper of the Indian team.
In the same program where Gavaskar talked about different perspectives on captaincy. Suresh Raina also highlighted the importance of winning the IPL as a skipper before taking up the national duty.
Suresh Raina’s statement on next contender for captaincy
According to him, Shubman Gill is the front-runner, but Gill is searching for his first IPL trophy as a captain, and if he wants to take up the job in Test cricket, he has to win the IPL title to get the respect in the dressing room despite having less Test cricket experience.
"There is no Virat or Rohit now; they used to look to the opposition in the eye and put them under pressure. That comes with energy, character, and body language. Shubman has that. Even Hardik Pandya has that," Raina responded.
He also added Rajat Patidar to the next contenders for the Indian team captaincy, but he has to prove himself more than Gill, as he has not done much captaincy on the big stage.
