SL vs NZ: Ravichandran Ashwin Reacts To Angelo Mathews's Timed Out Dismissal Against Bangladesh

Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was controversially timed out against Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan appealed against him in the match. In the process, Mathews became the first batsman in the history of the game to be dismissed times out.
The Bangladesh cricket team and their skipper Shakib coped with a lot of criticism. He was also accused of disrupting the spirit of the game by cricket experts and fans alike. Shakib however, stood his ground and said that he appealed because it was within the laws of the game.
Angelo Mathews was asked to walk off the field by the umpires after Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a time-out when Mathews was trying to get his helmet changed. He did come to the crease on time but his helmet strap came off and he wanted his helmet to be changed. That prompted Shakib to appeal against him and eventually, he was dismissed. He had to walk off the ground without even facing a ball.
Now ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reacted to this incident. He was the one who advocated for Mankad dismissals in the past and appealed against batsman leaving their crease way too early. However, he sympathised with Mathews saying that he had the right to be disappointed after Shakib’s appeal.
“One side is talking about the rules and another side is talking about the spirit of cricket. When Mathews came out to bat, his helmet was not okay, and he wanted to change that. I saw another video where Shakib did not bring his guard against Sri Lanka and he was allowed to bring it later. It has almost become warfare between these two countries,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“Actually with timed-out, yes Shakib appealed and the umpire gave it out, agreed. Recently, there has been information that Mathews was already warned by the umpires about the timed-out dismissal. But Mathews was really upset that he got out, and rightly so. No one should get out like that, everyone will feel bad about that,” Ashwin further added.
Both Angelo Mathews And Shakib Al Hasan Were Right: Ravichandran Ashwin
He concluded by saying that this incident has further fuelled the rivalry between the two cricket nations. Ashwin said that both cricketers were right in doing what they did except that it looked like a war in the middle.
“Both Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan were right. One person knew the rule and the other person asked if he could let it go since it was a helmet malfunction. The affected party is certainly the one who got out,” Ashwin concluded.
