Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour has opened up about how he managed to deal with the big names while serving as the coach.

The Indian dressing room could be an intimidating place for any coach let alone someone who did not have the prior experience of coaching any international team. Vikram Rathour was in a similar position when he was appointed India's batting coach in 2019. While he did have the experience of coaching domestic teams, he was yet to ply his trade for any international team.

The Indian team was filled with some of the game's biggest stars such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane, and others. Time and again, one has seen coaches underperforming with teams filled with big names. However, Vikram Rathour did a fine job as a batting coach and was later re-appointed as the batting coach in 2021 when Rahul Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri as the head coach.

You need to be fair with them: Vikram Rathour:

In a recent interview, Vikram Rathour explained how he managed to deal with the big names in the Indian team. Speaking to Sportstar, the former India batting coach stated that honesty is the best policy while dealing with big names, saying that one needs to be fair with such players.

He further said that he always believed in giving any player one more chance but also remained aware of when to move on.

"You need to be fair with them. I always believed it’s better to err on the side of giving one extra chance than one less. It would help if you provided one more game or extra opportunity," said Vikram Rathour.

"But there are still some decisions to be made. And sometimes, unfortunately, things don’t work out with some cricketers. And there are times when you need to move ahead," he added.

Rathour's tenure as the batting coach came to an end last month after the T20 World Cup. He along with head coach Dravid, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T. Dilip parted ways with the Indian team. Earlier this month, former India opener Gautam Gambhir replaced Dravid as the new head coach.
