South Africa's Farhaan Behardien Announces Retirement

On Tuesday, December 27, the 39-year-old South Africa National Cricket Team batsman Farhaan Behardien announced his retirement after an 18-year career at the professional level.

Farhaan Behardien played international cricket for South Africa National Cricket Team from 2012 to 2018. He made his ODI debut in 2013 against New Zealand and his T20I debut against India in 2012.

His last ODI appearance came in 2018 against India and he last played T20I cricket in 2018 against Australia. However, Farhaan Behardien was regularly playing in the domestic circuit for Boland till earlier this month, with his last appearance coming on December 23 against Western Province.

The Proteas batter took to Twitter to announce his retirement from cricket. However, he didn’t make it clear if he would continue to play certain formats.

“The dust has settled a bit. Been pretty emotional the last couple of weeks. 18 years has come and gone. 560 pro games across all formats, including 97 caps for my country, 17 trophies in the cabinet and blessed to have played in 4 world cups,” he stated in the post shared on Twitter.

The 39-year-old Farhaan Behardien further thanked his family and friends for providing him with a lot of support throughout his career. He also thanked his coaches, teammates and fans.

“Thanks to my family and friends who gave unwavering support. Thanks to all the coaches and support staff I’ve come across in my career, all my teammates, boy I’ve played with some of my heroes and some of the greats!

“Thanks specifically to the Titans (skyblues) for taking a punt on a young kid all those years ago & giving me a platform to showcase my skill. Thanks to the fans who supported me throughout the years and to those who gave me grief, whichever side of the fence you sat, it fueled my desire nonetheless. I lived my dreams.

“To be honest it wasn’t easy. The good stuff rarely are, but as a result haven’t “worked” a day in 18 years, cause it was my passion and I loved the graft. Feet up for a bit and onto the next challenge. Much love,” he wrote in the post shared on Twitter.

Overall, Farhaan Behardien played 59 ODIs and scored 1074 runs at an average of 30.68, including six half-centuries, and with the ball, he bagged 14 wickets. In T20Is, he featured in 38 games and tallied 518 runs at an average of 32.37 and a strike rate of 128.21, including one half-century. With the ball, he bagged 3 T20I wickets.

He also led South Africa National Cricket Team in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team in January 2017.
