Former Australian cricketer Shane Lee has stated that Steve Smith, who has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, recently, is not a cheat. Shane Lee has made it clear that Smith wasn’t trying anything such as pitch scuffing or was trying to cheat. However, he has maintained that Smith shouldn’t have been near the batting crease.

Notably, Steve Smith has found himself in a lot of controversies after the third Test at Sydney came to a close. The veteran Australian batsman was seen scuffing the pitch during the final day of the third Test between Australia and India. Cricketing legends, past and present, have fired shots at him for his poor act. However, the Australian cricketing fraternity has backed him after the incident.

Now, former Australian cricketer, Shane Lee has also come down in the support of Steve Smith. He has stated that Smith wasn’t trying to cheat and Cricket Australia should back him.

“He was not trying to cheat, but he should not be on the wicket. I am really, really concerned about some of our behaviour. Steve Smith scored a fantastic hundred in Sydney and the way he reacted afterwards, I thought there is a real anger there,” Shane Lee said.

Notably, Smith was banned by Cricket Australia (CA) in 2018 for a year for his involvement in the infamous Sandpapergate scandal and he was the skipper of the Australian Cricket Team across all formats when he was banned.

When Matthew Wade was handed over the captaincy in the recently concluded 2nd T20I against India, things became all the more heated up in the Australian media as they felt that Smith was being harassed. However, their coach, Justin Langer made it clear that they will go through the entire process to appoint Smith as the captain of the national side.
