Former Indian cricketer Stuart Binny will be joining Assam Cricket Team as an assistant coach for the upcoming domestic season. He recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

Ahead of the season, Assam Cricket Association (ACA) made the announcement. Ajay Ratra will continue to serve as the head coach of the Assam team while Binny will assist him. This will be Binny’s first stint in a coaching role since taking retirement.

The domestic season begins on November 4 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The busy schedule will then consist of the all-important Vijay Hazare tournament followed by the Ranji Trophy. Both Ratra and Binny have been assigned the responsibility of coaching for all three tournaments.

A media briefing was held last week where the list of coaches and support staff for other Assam teams was announced. The secretary of ACA, Devajit Saikia named the people who will be donning the staff roles. Binny will join Salil Sinha, who was helping out Batra last season as well, as the assistant coach.

We have already appointed Tribenee Bhattacharyya as the mental strengthening coach for our senior and U-19 women’s cricket teams. If required we can take the service of similar coaches for our men’s team also in future,” Saikia said.

Considering the pandemic times we live in, the move was welcomed by the fans. Plenty of players have been withdrawing their names of late in order to focus on mental health and well-being. With a coach on board, the situation in the dressing room will be much lighter.

The ACA will play hosts to three big BCCI tournaments this season. They have the SMAT from November 4-9, the U-25 Men’s cricket from November 17-26, and then a senior women’s T20 cricket tournament in February next year. There are a few grounds in the vicinity for the purpose – the ACA Stadium, Nehru Stadium, Barsapara, Judges Field and NFRSA Stadium.
