Former England pacer Stuart Broad revealed that he and James Anderson had originally planned to retire together from international cricket. However, Stuart Broad clarified that James Anderson is excited to continue playing international cricket until the next English summer.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson played together in 138 matches in the longer format of the game. The pace duo picked up 537 wickets, including 46 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls. They were the only fast bowlers to complete the 600-wicket milestone in red-ball cricket.

It Was Like An Unwritten Clause – Stuart Broad

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Stuart Broad revealed details of his conversation with James Anderson during the Old Trafford Test.

“It was like an unwritten clause in a contract that Jimmy and I never wanted to finish at the same time. We always wanted an overlap one way or the other, a crossover of knowledge, not 300-plus matches of Test experience disappearing out of the changing room,” Broad said.

“So, I chatted to Jimmy during the Old Trafford Test and he said he was going to work on loads of different things, would make sure he was as fit as anything going to India this winter and was buzzing about next summer,” he added.

Broad retired from professional cricket after the conclusion of the 2023 Ashes series. His retirement match became even more memorable as he took the last two wickets of the Australian innings. He finished his career with 604 Test wickets in 167 matches.

It Could Be Time For Me To End – Stuart Broad

The 37-year-old Stuart Broad stated that he decided to retire at the right time after hearing how excited his teammate James Anderson was to continue his career.

“Hearing how excited he was to carry on suggested that it could be time for me to end what was the ultimate partnership, really. One that grew over time. We understood each other probably better than we understood ourselves,” he further stated.

“I could spot things in his technique; he could spot things in mine. We would drive each other forward all the time in training and matches, developing a hugely competitive spirit, and our attributes complemented each other.

“Me being tall, I hit a different length to Jimmy. He swung it, I seamed it and that allowed us to put a lot of pressure on batters,” he concluded.

James Anderson failed to live up to expectations in the 2023 Ashes series. He struggled to trouble opposition batters throughout the series, managing only five wickets in four Tests at an average of 85.40.
