On the night of India’s third T20 World Cup trophy-winning celebration, there were some doubts over the international career of the skipper, Suryakumar Yadav. During the match after the press conference, with the medal on his neck, Yadav himself revealed his plans with the Men’s Indian national cricket team.

For the press conference, Yadav was present to face the media alongside the head coach Gautam Gambhir. The Final of the T20 World Cup 2026 marks the end of a cycle, which started after the 2024 T20 World Cup, where the Men in Blue claimed the trophy after a long wait, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.

Is Suryakumar Yadav set to retire from international cricket soon?

India outclassed New Zealand by a massive margin in the Final

Talking about the match, India, batting first, scored 255 runs in exchange for 5 wickets. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma offered India a flying start. The explosive opening secured 98 runs, which acted as a strong launch pad, on which Ishan Kishan and Shivam Dube arranged some more fireworks. While Ishan and Abhishek secured a half-century each, Sanju got out after scoring 89 runs.

The total of 255 proved more than enough to outclass New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Troubled by back-to-back blows, New Zealand could get only 159 runs for 10 wickets in reply; India won the match by a massive 96-run margin.

During the post-match presentation ceremony, the Indian skipper credited his former, Rohit Sharma, for the magical night on March 8, 2026. Yadav said that because of Team India’s heroics, under the leadership of Sharma, they were able to create history.

Suryakumar Yadav thanked Rohit Sharma for the rare achievement

“I think we knew that we were playing some good cricket throughout the two years, and it was going really well. We just wanted to follow all the good habits that we followed in the 2024 T20 World Cup”, Suryakumar Yadav said after the match.

“It has been a long journey. Started post-2024 World Cup when BCCI at that time, Jay (Shah) bhai, at that time Secretary, Rohit (Sharma) Bhai, and everyone, they showed faith in me, allowed me to lead this wonderful side, and then it was a long, long, long cycle coming here again at the Narendra Modi Stadium and doing it. I think it’s a special feeling”, Suryakumar Yadav further added to pay respect.

Through winning the final match of the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India created multiple records, which no other team was able to do.

Major records owned by India:

  1. Three-time T20 World Cup 2026 champions
  2. First team to defend the T20 World Cup title successfully.
  3. First team to defend the T20 World Cup title on home soil.
