India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, by beating New Zealand by 96 runs. The Men in Blue became the first team to win back-to-back trophies and also the first nation to win this title at home. Sanju Samson was awarded the Player of the Tournament for his sensational performance for the side.

Sanju Samson had a start-stop kind of a tournament, played one match at the group stages, and performed decently, scoring 22 off 8 balls. Later, after India’s loss to South Africa, he was brought back into the side, and since then, Sanju never turned back, scoring 321 runs in just five innings, with three consecutive half-centuries, with two of them being in the semi-final and final.

Sanju Samson is in the form of his life

Sanju Samson’s redemption story has been one of the talks of the town after the conclusion of the tournament. Suryakumar Yadav joined the list of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to win the T20 World Cup; SKY is already 35 and will not be able to continue for long.

Though Suryakumar Yadav has expressed his desire to play the 2028 T20 World Cup and also declared his next goal of winning the Olympic gold medal for India, but 2028 Surya would turn 37, and with the amount of talent in India, he might not be able to continue in the shorter format of the game.

I feel, Samson sure can be a candidate- Mohammad Kaif

Now, the discussion has been on who will be the next captain for India in the T20 format? Though Shubman Gill was preferred, he has failed to earn a place in the shortest format, given his style of play. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels that Sanju Samson should be made the next captain of India.

Mohammad Kaif told Ravish Bisht in a video, "Tough to say right now as to who would become the next captain, but Samson could well be the one. I mean, why not? A Captain must be someone who has seen the world. Implementing bowling changes, playing the perfect XI, and backing players out of form, as with Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy."

"A captain would know that these things happen. They themselves have gone through this. They understand these little things. So, I feel, Samson sure can be a candidate. However, if Surya keeps playing well they he can hold on to the position longer. If you’re fit, you can play till 38-39. There’s no problem."

He has captained a lot in the IPL- Mohammad Kaif

Kaif believes that Sanju Samson has the experience of leading the side as well. Sanju led Rajasthan Royals for many years and also took the side to the final during the 2022 season of the competition. The former batter believes that, since Sanju Samson is at his peak form and having a golden run, he should be made the next captain.

Kaif further said, "And in the shorter format, you need more experience. Someone who has captained remains forever valuable. If Surya decides to step down, Sanju can fill that position. He has captained a lot in the IPL and took the Rajasthan Royals to the final (2022). He is only 31. Might be the next Indian captain."

However, the team India management and the chief selector Ajit Agarkar have not taken any decision to change the T20I captain. But Axar Patel will also be in consideration, keeping in mind that he has been excellent with his all-around abilities and is also the vice-captain for the side.
