The Suryakumar Yadav-led India National Cricket Team’s crushing defeat in the fourth T20I match against New Zealand has raised serious doubts about India’s preparation for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Heavy defeat sparks T20 World Cup 2026 concerns

Following the loss, India’s team combination, batting order, and player selection are under heavy discussion, with Shreyas Iyer being the centre of it.

The Men in Blue had already taken an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, and this gave the team management freedom to try new ideas in the fourth game at Vizag.

With two T20Is and a few warm-up games still left before the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, this phase was considered the best time to experiment and test tough situations instead of playing safe.

Ishan Kishan's injury changed Indian plans

But the team faced an unexpected problem when Ishan Kishan, who was in great form in the previous two games, was ruled out due to a minor injury. His absence created a space in the playing XI, and many expected Shreyas Iyer to finally get a chance to return to T20I cricket.

However, that did not happen, and this call was obvious, as Iyer is not part of India’s current T20 World Cup 2026 squad. With Tilak Varma expected to be fully fit soon, the Indian team management appears focused on backing players who are already in the World Cup picture, rather than bringing Iyer back into the mix.

Shreyas Iyer overlooked in planned experiment

Instead of replacing Kishan with another option like all-rounder Axar Patel, the selectors and coaches made a bold move. They brought in fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. India went into the match with five proper bowlers, along with all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.

After the match, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that the team wanted to test the batting lineup under pressure. They wanted to see how the batters would react if India had to chase a big score like 180 or 200 runs and lost early wickets. It was a planned strategy.

Suryakumar Yadav explains Iyer's snub

The experiment did not work against the Black Caps in Vizag, but the results were not the main focus in this match. And the Indian captain stressed that giving match time to players who are part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad was more important than sticking with regular names.

Suryakumar Yadav said at the post-match presentation: “We purposely played 6 batters today, we wanted to challenge ourselves - for example chasing 180 or 200, as well wanted to see, if we are 2 down or 3 down, we wanted to play all the players who are part of the T20 World Cup.”

This move shows that the team is ready to accept short-term pain to get clear answers before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which hinted that Iyer is not in their plans for the showpiece event.
