Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar felt that India’s batting approach in powerplay has been the issue behind the poor stints in the ICC tournament after the early exit in the T20 World cup 2021. India lost to Pakistan, and New Zealand in their first two games of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and the road was always going to be tough from there to make it to the semi-finals.

Despite three big wins in their next three games, India could not progress and since 2013, India hasn’t won an ICC tournament. A lot of questions have been asked for the Indian team performances in the ICC tournaments and Sunil Gavaskar had his say in what has been going wrong in big games.

India Haven’t Taken Advantage Of Powerplay, Reckons Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar mentioned that India’s team selection has been one of the issues and wanted the side to change the batting approach. He added that India has not been going hard in the powerplay and it has affected India’s totals in ICC tournaments.

“Making too many changes in a team isn’t right, because it’s not like India lost all its matches. In two matches, the batters could not deliver what was expected of them and that is the reason that India is in such a state right now. The approach needs to change.

“The fact that in the first 6 overs, there are only 2 fielders outside the 30-yard-circle, India haven’t taken advantage of it for the last few ICC tournaments. Which is why, whenever India are up against a strong team, one that has good bowlers… India cannot score. So that needs to change,” Sunil Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Sunil Gavaskar Feels Good Fielding Can Make A Difference

Sunil Gavaskar noted that India should opt for players who can be excellent fielders and stated the example of the New Zealand team. He added that India do not have many players who can dive or save at the boundary lines.

“The second and the most importantly, they should have players who are phenomenal in fielding. The way New Zealand fielded, saved runs, took catches… it stood out.

“Even if the attack is ordinary, the pitch is placid, good fielding can make a lot of difference. If you look at the Indian team, except 3-4 outstanding fielders, you can’t depend on the rest to save runs or dive at the boundary,” he added.
