T20 World Cup 2021: Sunil Gavaskar Suggests India To Include Rahul Chahar Against Scotland And Bat First

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reckoned that India should opt for a leg spinner against Scotland and bat first so that they use the conditions well in getting more wickets. However, India will need a miracle from here on to progress into the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2021, and they will have to be helped along from New Zealand as well.
Pakistan has already progressed into the semi-finals of the tournament after four wins in four games. It is going to be a battle between India, Afghanistan, and New Zealand. New Zealand do have the advantage of all the teams as they will progress to the semi-finals if they manage to win all their games, while India has to get their net run rate up as well as hope for New Zealand to lose at least one more game.
“It May Be A Good Idea To Go In With Three Spinners” – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar opined that team selection will be crucial against Scotland and wanted India to go in with three spinners, including leg spinner Rahul Chahar. He added leg spinners are always going to be a threat in the UAE pitches if they start to bowl slower through the air.
“Team selection will be the key, and because the Scots rarely get to play top-class spin bowling, it may be a good idea to go in with three spinners, one of whom should be a leg spinner.
“Not only are good leg spinners a rarity, but they are also invariably slower through the air and thus tough for the batter to use pace off the pitch,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Times of India.
Sunil Gavaskar Explains The Importance Of Leg Spinners
Sunil Gavaskar mentioned that leg spinners are more dangerous when they start to give a lot more flight in the air and noted that the leg spinners are always going to produce priceless wicket dot balls.
“Often, when the ball is released above the eyeline, the best of batsmen take a little time to read the length as their head has moved up a fraction instead of being still. So, a good leg spinner will always be able to get the wicket dot ball which is priceless in this form of the game,” he added.
India might have to bring in Rahul Chahar only if they manage to drop either Mohammad Shami or Shardul Thakur, which is going to be tough as well.
