Former Pakistan captain and legendary pacer, Wasim Akram has picked his top contenders for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The 7th edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is all set to take place later this year after a gap of five years.
The 7th edition was originally supposed to take place in Australia last year but it was eventually suspended due to the pandemic.
India is slated to host the forthcoming edition but with the country currently under the grip of the second wave of the pandemic, the venue could be shifted to the UAE.
Nevertheless, Wasim Akram has still tipped Team India as prime favorites to win the quadrennial event.
Besides India, Akram picked defending champions West Indies, former titleholders and the current No.1 ranked England and New Zealand as potential favorites to win the title.
“I suppose, between the main teams, India appear favorites. They play fearless brand of T20 cricket. England is also at the top of the ladder. I think New Zealand too. And you never know about the West Indies. If their main players are in, they have a tendency to scare,” Wasim Akram said on ARY news.
Wasim Akram on Pakistan’s T20 World Cup chances
When asked about Pakistan’s chances of doing an encore of their 2009 triumph, Wasim Akram said that while he would want his nation to do well, he reckoned that Pakistan will have to work on their team combination to have any chance of winning the T20 World Cup title.
He further added that middle-order is a burning issue for Pakistan and they will have to find a way to solve the conundrum to give themselves the best possible chance to regain the title.
‘Pakistan need to work on their team combination. Obviously, being a Pakistani, I would want Pakistan to win the World Cup. That will be a dream come true for all of us, especially the young captain, and if they need to improve their combination, find the best XI, they can fight. The problem of No. 5 and No. 6 needs to be solved,” Akram pointed out.
