Days after England, New Zealand and South Africa announced their squads, Rohit Sharma's team India will announce their squad today for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The upcoming T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies will give the Indian team another shot at a major ICC silverware which has gone missing since 2013. The Champions Trophy triumph in England under MS Dhoni's captaincy remains as India's last international title. Rohit Sharma's side had the chance to claim to 2 trophies last year but Pat Cummins' Australia denied them on both occasions.

Rohit Sharma, Ajit Agarkar and Rahul Dravid's meeting on Sunday

On Sunday (April 28th) after Delhi Capitals' clash against Mumbai Indians in New Delhi, Rohit Sharma had a 2-hour meeting with Rahul Dravid and Ajit Agarkar. The Indian captain, head coach and chief selector discussed in detail about India's 15-man squad composition for the ICC T20 World Cup later this June.

Reports have also suggested that Rohit Sharma had a short discussion or a meeting for general planning with Dravid and Agarkar on April 26th. But on 28th of April, the trio had a thorough meeting as to who are going to be the core players of the 15-member squad and who will be picked as the backups.

Focus on adaptable players

One of the major highlights of this meeting, according to reports, was the surfaces over there in USA and West Indies. The hosting nations will not have the same kind of pitches as there have been rolled out for the 2024 Indian Premier League season.

Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid and Ajit Agarkar reportedly kept the conditions in mind to pick the World Cup squad. Their focus was not on players who have impressed in this IPL season but on those who have the ability to tweak their game in different surfaces.

Pitches in West Indies, specifically are not going to be those flat batting tracks that have been laid out in IPL. The conditions are going to be much more different and much more slower and we might not see 250+ totals being scored regularly. Therefore, the focus is on players who are capable of adjusting their game accordingly.

With this being Rohit Sharma's 4th ICC tournament as India's captain, the right-hand batter would not want to leave any stone unturned. After squandering 2 golden opportunities at the WTC final in June and Cricket World Cup final in October 2023, Rohit and Co. will be hungrier than ever for the elusive ICC trophy.

When will India start their T20 World Cup campaign

The Indian team will kick-off their 20-team T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on Wednesday, June 5th against Ireland in New York. Their next Group A game will see them clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9th at the same venue. Rohit Sharma's men will take on the United States of America and Canada on June 12 and 15 in NY and Florida in their final 2 group games.
