Former India cricketer and Chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar feels that the current Indian team is one of the strongest teams in the world heading to the T20 WC 2024.

Most of the players in the Indian team have flown over to the capital city of USA to prepare for their only warm-up match for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Virat Kohli is the only plater who is yet to arrive in New York while others have already begun their practice sessions. This is going to be another ICC event that the Indians would want to win and end their trophy drought.

Last year, Rohit Sharma's men had two golden opportunities to win an ICC event. Such occasions come very rarely and despite knowing that, the Indian team squandered both opportunities.

They lost in the World Test Championship as well as the 50-Over World Cup finale, both times against the same Australian side. The Aussies will now be attempting to complete the ICC trophy treble.

What did Dilip Vengsarkar say about team India's squad for T20 WC?

While speaking at a Sports Journalists award function held in Mumbai recently, Dilip Vengsarkar was invited as the chief guest of the event. Therein, the former cricketer spoke on a variety of subjects from India's chances at the World Cup to Australia posing a constant threat to the Indian team at ICC tournaments.

He was also asked about his thoughts on the composition of the current Indian squad and if it's among the best in the world. In his response, Dilip Vengsarkar claimed that the current side is actually one of the best in the world. He then bashed Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, and KL Rahul for unknown reasons, claiming the Indian side would be better off without these three players.

"The current Indian team, I think, is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, put a Gill out or Rahul or Rinku Singh out, I’m sure it’s a very strong team. And I wish them all the success. Because, I think, it’s one of the best in the world at the moment." - Vengsarkar said at the Sports Journalists meet.

Vengsarkar stresses on teams requiring strong starts at the World Cup

Dilip Vengsarkar then went on to add that the first six overs of powerplay are going to be very imperative for not just the Indian team but every team. Vengsarkar stated that powerplays were crucial for teams during the IPL where batters just wanted to smack every ball and the same can be expected in this World Cup edition.

"The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It’s very difficult to say in this format because everybody is a very important member of the team. But the thing is that, as you have seen in IPL, the first six were very important. How you give a good start in the first six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen." - Vengsarkar added.
