Legendary Indian commentator Ravi Shastri has backed India's top-order batter Shubman Gill to come out as a better player following the T20 World Cup 2024 snub.
Shubman Gill is among those 4 players who have been kept as backup players for the 15-man Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 from June. Gill is joined by left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed, right-arm seamer Avesh Khan, and the power hitter Rinku Singh, whose exclusion sent a shockwave around the country.

What did Ravi Shastri say about Shubman Gill?

While commentating on the match between Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad, Ravi Shastri had positive things to say about Shubman Gill. Shastri was discussing the Indian team's squad composition at the T20 World Cup and if they are strong enough to finally claim the coveted trophy.

So in that context, Ravi Shastri mentioned the name of reserve back-up for the 2024 edition - Shubman Gill, who was present at the crease during the discussion. The 1983 World Cup winner claimed that Gill must have felt bad after not finding his name in the main squad in what would have been his maiden appearance at a T20 WC.

Shastri was pretty confident that Shubman Gill was hurting deep down but he suggested the latter to perceive that setback positively. Shastri also asked Gill to work harder on his skills to try to get better and believes that his World Cup exclusion was not in his hands.

That there is so much talent in India, Shubman Gill went off the radar of the Men's selection committee but that is not the end of his world. The 24-year-old has a lot of potential and he will only continue to get better after this.

"He would be hurting. He should be hurting. He should look at it positively and try to get better. A player of his caliber would walk into any side, but such is the talent in India that he doesn't get a place. His class will continue to grow."
"He might not be in the World Cup side but he will take it in his stride. That will help him become a better player. He'll go from strength to strength." - Ravi Shastri said during commentary.

Gill is nowhere near the level he had in IPL 2023

Had Shubman Gill performed the way he did during the IPL 2023 season, the chief selectors would have had him in the main squad. But Gill is nowhere near the level he displayed last season barring the century he scored recently against the Chennai Super Kings.
Instead of him, Yashasvi Jaiswal was entrusted with a spot in the main squad and he seems to be the one top open along with skipper Rohit Sharma. The opening pair is a tried and tested one and it will be interesting to see how the combination works out. India's campaign in the USA and West Indies will begin on June 5th against Ireland and they take on arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9.
