Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has backed skipper Rohit Sharma to lead the Men in Blue to victory in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and the West Indies. Yuvraj Singh highlighted that Rohit Sharma is a very crucial member of the squad, describing him as a really good captain.
Yuvraj Singh was appointed as one of the brand ambassadors for the ICC tournament alongside former West Indies opener and Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt. The former Indian all-rounder will participate in promotional events ahead of the World Cup, scheduled to be played from June 1 to 29.
Yuvraj Singh played a crucial role in India's triumph in the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. Singh amassed 148 runs in six matches at an average of 29.60 and a strike rate of 194.74. However, Team India has struggled since then, qualifying for only one final in the next seven editions.
Rohit Sharma's Presence Is Going To Be Very Crucial - Yuvraj Singh
Speaking to the ICC, Yuvraj Singh emphasized Rohit Sharma's significance as a leader for India in the upcoming tournament. The 42-year-old highlighted Rohit's ability to make sensible decisions as captain under pressure.
“(Rohit’s presence is going to be) very crucial. I think we need a really good captain, a sensible captain who takes decisions well under pressure. And he’s the one to take them,” T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador Yuvraj said.
“He was the captain when we lost in the (Cricket World Cup) 50-over final (in 2023). He has won five IPL trophies as a captain. I think we need somebody like him to captain India,” he added.
Yuvraj Singh shared a deep connection with Rohit Sharma. Yuvraj was part of the Indian team when Rohit made his T20I debut in 2007, and their bond extended to the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Yuvraj announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after winning the IPL title with Mumbai in 2019.
Rohit Sharma has been part of India's squad in all seasons of the T20 World Cup. He was a member of the squad that won the 2007 T20 World Cup. He scored 88 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 144.26. Notably, he played a crucial unbeaten knock of 30 runs off 16 balls in the final match against Pakistan.
