Former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar strongly believes that the Indian team can win the series and defeat Australia at The Gabba, which is Australia’s fortress. Sunil Gavaskar’s comments came after the historic resistance from the Indian batters in the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

India had to bat out 4 sessions in the fourth innings against an Australian bowling attack comprising of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon, to save the Test match and prevent the hosts from taking a lead in the 4-match series.

I am very very proud of this team: Sunil Gavaskar

Speaking to India Today, Sunil Gavaskar heaped high praises on the Indian team’s effort to bat out 131 overs and save the Test which keeps the series level at 1-1 going into the fourth Test in Brisbane, which commences on 15th January.

When the host, Rajdeep Sardesai, asked Gavaskar to comment on Team India’s performance on the final day, the former India opener lavished praise on the players, who despite struggling with injuries put up a determined show in Sydney.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic performance. It showed your grit, your character, your resilience, your determination, and it is something that all Indian cricketers and supporters should be extremely proud of. I am very very proud of this team,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

The 1983 World Cup winner is confident that the Indian team is capable of defeating Australia at the Gabba, a venue where the hosts have not lost since 1988, and hence it called their fortress. The Kangaroos are on a 28-match unbeaten streak at The Gabba.

“They have stayed alive in the series. They have given themselves a chance of winning the series at The Gabba. Looking at the kind of new ball attack that we have, the way we have played in Sydney, it certainly gives you the hope that Gabba, which is Australia’s fortress can be breached by this Indian team,” the legendary batsman added.
