Team USA Attempt To Make History & Qualify For The ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2022

  • Team USA has the chance to make history as they’ve received the chance to qualify for their first-ever senior World Cup at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
  • Eight teams will compete for the sole two qualifying positions available for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 that’s set to be hosted in Australia between October and November
  • The USA will prepare for the tournament with a one-week tour in Namibia with matches versus Jersey and Namibia

Last week we received an announcement from the USA Cricket National Selection Panel that contained the 14-man team that will compete on behalf of the USA during their tour of Africa that rounds off in the ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier B in Zimbabwe, which will run between July 11 – July 17. More importantly, two qualifying positions will be available for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year.

With a successful nine points earned from a potential sixteen in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 season, the USA team are high on confidence after impressing on home soil in Texas. Vice-Captain of the team Aaron Jones – a New York representative – proved his leadership capabilities during the League 2 season. Local supporters from The Empire State began cashing their tickets from BetMGM New York sportsbook once the competition landed on American soil.

With a struggle to find consecutive success during the early stages of the League 2 series, Team USA provided the runs that equalled winning bets for their avid supporters. When questioned following the final ODI at Moosa Stadium in Pearland, Texas, Judge shared his delight in the team’s turnaround: “I’m pretty happy with the performance, coming into a series like, we’ve had two back-to-back series and its tough on the guy’s bodies.”

He continued: “The wickets were good; it shows in the results; I think many batsmen got scores. I believe USA cricket sometimes finds itself on the wrong end of the stick when it comes to tight games; I’d like us to come out on the better end of those situations. I believe reading the situation of the game is an improvement we can make.

When questioned about the upcoming T20 in Zimbabwe, he said: “Ending our last game with a win is great going into the next tour. Overall, USA cricket is gelling together nicely, we have a good family building right now, and this will show when we head into Africa.”

However, the focus must now turn to the shortest format with preparation tours in Namibia and Harare before the most important scheduled date in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Practice fixtures versus Namibia and Jersey will arrive before a final two warm-up games take place in Harare against the Netherlands, perfect meetings to keep the team in shape and focused.

New arrivals to the squad, Vatsal Vaghela and Marty Kain, will join the US team on tour and the returning Jaskaran Malhotra, who recently missed the games in Texas due to a hand injury.

Team USA Cricket: The Task Ahead & Importance

The Americans will face the host Zimbabwe, Singapore and Jersey in Group A; they’ll be required to finish in the top two of the group and then succeed in a semi-final meeting against an opponent from Group B to stand a chance of reaching this year’s global tournament. Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda are the opposing sides that make up the eight-squad competition.

Michael Voss, Chairmen of the Men’s National Selection Panel, commented: “The selection panel has gone with this T20-focused squad that will give the USA the strongest possible chance of taking a historic first-ever qualification for any senior World Cup. Vatsal Vaghela and Marty Kain both performed well in Florida during the drawn Ireland v USA series in our last T20 internationals in December. They retained their places, while we are confident that Jaskaran Malhotra will have had sufficient time to recover from his unfortunate hand injury to give us his power hitting in the middle order.”

Richard Done, USA Cricket Operations Director, added: “The ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe is a genuine chance for our Men’s National Team to make history and qualify for a first Cricket World Cup. We have worked hard to put a powerful T20 preparation program in place with T20 games vs Namibia and Jersey in Windhoek before a pair of games vs the Netherlands in Harare. USA Cricket would like to thank everyone involved at Cricket Namibia, KNCB Cricket and Jersey Cricket for their assistance in helping to facilitate these matches; we are also very grateful to Zimbabwe Cricket as well. We know how difficult this qualifier will be with nine high-quality sides battling to get on the plane to Australia. Still, we hope to play to the best of our abilities as a team as we seek to take one of the two qualification places.
