Australian captain Pat Cummins has indicated that David Warner’s retirement from red-ball cricket won’t directly impact his selection for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. However, Pat Cummins commended David Warner’s performance in the 2023 World Cup.
Selectors will pick the squad for the Test series against Pakistan in the coming weeks. The first game of the red-ball series is scheduled for December 14 in Perth. David Warner plans to retire after the third Test match in January 2024, but his desire will depend on the selectors.
Team’s Not Picked Yet – Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins stated that the team’s selection will be made by the selectors after the Shield round. Cummins highlighted Warner’s bravery and ability to take on the opposition, noting that Warner is currently hitting the ball beautifully.
“Team’s not picked yet, selectors will pick it after this Shield round so we’ll wait and see,” Cummins told media on Tuesday.
“It can’t hurt (being in form). Any player’s a better player when they’re going in with confidence to the game, so I thought he (Warner) was brilliant this World Cup, like he has been with the white ball for a long period of time,” he added.
“Again, he wasn’t just playing for himself out there, he’d go and take the game on, be brave, put it back on the opposition, I think he’s hitting the ball beautifully at the moment.”
David Warner Is A Great Of Our Game In All Formats – Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins acknowledged David Warner’s excellence across formats but insisted that it does not guarantee him a Test send-off. Cummins emphasized that performance considerations were paramount when forming the team.
“He’s a great of our game in all formats, no doubt that’s part of it. (But) first and foremost you always think of the performance side of things when you’re picking a side,” Cummins further stated.
Warner has graced Test cricket with his aggressive and efficient approach. The left-handed batter made his debut in 2011, and his career is studded with memorable innings. The southpaw scored an unbeaten triple century (335* runs) against Pakistan at Adelaide in 2019.
